At the start of a Smart Moves class, the children come together at The Magic Space door and create a special word, phrase or song to enter the Magic Space.

Once inside, the children and Amanda form a meeting circle so that each participant is able introduce themselves to the group if they wish. The atmosphere is a welcoming one in which there is special time for each child. The rules of playing well together are introduced at the beginning of each session.

The children begin Gross Motor Activities frequently using large size foam shapes. There is also equipment for jumping, rolling and sliding. The floor of the Magic Space is padded and all the equipment is soft and safe. Some shapes are large enough to contain the children's bodies while they move. When interacting with the blocks the children have opportunity for activities that include jumping, falling, losing and finding one's balance, pushing, pulling and dragging objects, and stacking and toppling the blocks.

The Gross Motor activity is followed by a time for Dramatic Play when the space and equipment are used in a different way. The children move naturally to free flow fantasy play, facilitated by Amanda Berry, who carefully observes and guides the session. During this time large physical movements tend to slow down.

During play children develop awareness of personal space, respect for other's personal space, and become conscious of opportunities to develop play situations with each other.

The big foam shapes are used to build houses, spaceships, castles, boats, cars, and so on. The children physically experience the environments they have created; hiding and reappearing, inside and outside, open and closed, etc. Colorful fabric sheets, scarves, hats and costumes are offered to the children at this time to include in and enhance the fantasy world.

Next is the time where children will seek space to relax. When exposed to constant activity and interaction children develop and then learn to manage stress. Providing opportunities for space and time to relax can contribute to positive group and individual behavior.

The children move as a group from the actiivty space to the art area to engage in symbolic play. The activity of painting, working with clay, reading books and doing puzzles allow the children to recreate and represent what they experienced in the activity area.

A student drew the structure he built with blocks to help remember it for when his friends come to Smart Moves next time.
